Scientific Spelling

In Scientific Spelling (SS), participants learn how to teach students to analyze words for spelling. Instruction includes phonemic awareness, reliable spelling patterns, rules, spelling irregular words, and procedures for effective instruction. Participants practice analyzing the phonemic, syllabic, and morphemic structure of words to determine which spelling pattern applies, then use error analysis to pinpoint exactly where a student's spelling is breaking down.

Audience: Grades 1–8 teachers; may also be appropriate for teachers outside that grade range.

Details: Runs 3.5 hours (half day), available in person, live virtual, or on-demand. Included in Language Enrichment (LE), Language Enrichment for Older Students (LEOS), Basic Language Skills: Introduction, and the Online Certification Program for Dyslexia Specialists (OCPDS).

Participants leave with a suggested scope and sequence for spelling instruction, along with guidance for building spelling practice into the daily 10–15 minute lesson routine; can also be used as supplemental instruction alongside a core spelling program.
