In Developing Metacognitive Strategies (DMS), participants learn instructional strategies that increase oral language, vocabulary and background knowledge; summarization activities; questioning techniques; and composition. This structured literacy instructional framework is designed to build deep comprehension skills by guiding students to think about their thinking as they read. Participants practice modeling their own thinking aloud and teaching students to generate and answer questions of a text before, during, and after reading.

Audience: Grades 4–8 teachers; may also be appropriate for students outside that grade range.

Details: Runs 12 hours over 2 days, available in person or live virtual. Included in Language Enrichment for Older Students (LEOS).

Participants leave with a curriculum that includes a scope and sequence of lessons, with a lesson routine of 30–45 minutes when using those lessons, plus instructional strategies that can be used with any text; can also be used as supplemental instruction alongside a core reading program.

Prerequisites: None.
