Basic Language Skills: Introduction is the cornerstone of Neuhaus's Dyslexia Specialist Preparation Program and one of the most comprehensive Structured Literacy courses offered. Through in-depth coursework — including BLS Introduction, Book 1A, and Book 1B — and an intensive supervised practicum, participants learn to plan, deliver, and assess instruction in phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, oral language, comprehension, and composition for students with dyslexia and related disorders. Coursework builds toward Teaching through Basic Language Skills concept 63, a practicum milestone participants complete as part of this course, and serves as the entry point into Neuhaus's broader Dyslexia Specialist Preparation Program (DSPP) pathway toward ALTA certification as a Certified Academic Language Practitioner (CALP) or Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT).

Audience: Reading and Dyslexia Specialists, and Tier III Intervention Teachers.

Details: Runs 11 days, 71 hours, in person or live virtual. Includes BLS Introduction, Book 1A, and Book 1B. Includes Scientific Spelling (SS) as embedded content. Recommended lesson routine of at least 180 minutes per week in an intervention setting.

Participants leave with the foundational coursework and supervised practicum experience required to begin the Dyslexia Specialist Preparation Program (DSPP), including a full framework for planning, delivering, and assessing Structured Literacy instruction for students with dyslexia and related disorders.

Prerequisites to enroll: BLS Preview Session, a writing sample, completion of Reading Readiness, a college transcript or diploma, and a signed Acknowledgement Agreement.
