Accurate & Automatic Reading: Foundations

In Accurate and Automatic Reading: Foundations, participants learn instructional strategies grounded in the theory and research behind skilled decoding, including explicit, systematic instruction in the structure of the English language, to build a strong foundation for delivering evidence-based decoding instruction. Participants examine why explicit, systematic decoding instruction works, using the same research base as the in-person AAR course, so they can evaluate or strengthen whatever decoding curriculum they're already using.

Audience: 1st–3rd grade teachers, and teachers of students who need instruction in foundational decoding; may also be appropriate for students outside that grade range.

Details: Runs 6 hours, on-demand. Curriculum-agnostic — covers the theory and research behind skilled decoding rather than the AAR curriculum itself; includes suggested activities but does not include a lesson plan.

Participants leave with evidence-based instructional strategies for skilled decoding — not a scope and sequence or lesson routine — that can also be used as supplemental instruction alongside a core reading program.
