Why Choose Structured Reading & Spelling (SRS)?

Reading is essential for daily life, yet many students in grades 9–12 and adults still struggle. Structured Reading and Spelling (SRS) equips instructors with the tools and strategies to effectively support these learners.
  • Research-Based Curriculum
SRS is a research-based professional development series that empowers educators to teach older students and adults with literacy challenges. Rooted in the research based on the Science of Reading and principles of Structured Literacy, participants will learn the what, why and how of Structured Literacy instruction.
  • Targeted for High School & Adult Learners
Neuhaus has been teaching adult learners for over 30 years and incorporated our knowledge and experience from the world of adult literacy into the development of SRS. Our program delivers practical, relevant content and explicit instruction to build foundational and functional literacy skills. With a deep understanding of how adults learn best, we’ve created a program that delivers results.
  • Comprehensive Literacy Instruction
In every lesson, students will develop literacy skills in: understanding the structure of English, word attack skills, spelling, fluent reading, vocabulary, comprehension, and written composition.
  • Skill Mastery & Confidence Building
SRS empowers students to gain the skills they need to become confident and proficient readers.

Key Features

Key Features of SRS Manuals and Student Materials

Systematic and Explicit Instruction

Each manual follows a sequential, systematic order of introduction. Concepts build upon each other, providing continual review. Easier concepts are taught first and then progress to more complex concepts.

Scripted Lessons

To provide clear guidance for instructors, all SRS lessons are fully scripted. Each lesson provides step-by-step procedures, directive text for instructional time, and sample student answers.

Cumulative Review and Practice

Lessons are designed to reinforce concepts through repeated practice and review, ensuring mastery before progressing to new topics.

What’s Included in SRS Professional Learning

SRS is a 4-Volume program. With each volume, participants will engage in sustained, robust practice-based professional development that builds the depth of content knowledge required for teaching reading.

Experienced Instructional Staff

All Neuhaus instructional staff members hold certifications from the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA) and/or International Dyslexia Association (IDA). Our instructional staff members are highly qualified and trained in the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy lessons.

Instructor Manuals

SRS is a 4-Volume program. With each registration fee and professional learning, participants will receive fully scripted instructor manuals. In addition to an instructor script, manuals include questions to deepen student understanding, anticipated student responses, corrective feedback suggestions, and a glossary of terms.

Instructional Materials

Included in the registration fee for professional learning of each volume, participants will receive a diagnostic placement screener, masters for student reading practices, progress monitors, and procedural charts. Also included in materials are colorful image deck cards to expand vocabulary and deepen student understanding on a variety of topics.

  • Neuhaus classes provide an explicit, systematic approach to teaching basic language skills and follow the International Dyslexia Association Knowledge and Practice Standards for Teachers of Reading.

Structured Reading & Spelling Professional Learning, Volume 1

SRS meets students where they are with a two-track system—Standard and Accelerated—to support diverse skill levels. In SRS Professional Learning Volume 1, participants engage in four immersive days of training, exploring both the Standard and Accelerated SRS Volume 1 manuals. Educators will learn to effectively place students using the diagnostic screener, ensuring every learner gets the right start.
Accelerated Pace Volume 1: For students with basic knowledge of sound-symbol correspondence, SRS Accelerated Pace, Vol. 1 combines common concepts and moves at an “accelerated pace” to introduce & instruct more challenging concepts. These concepts include syllable division patterns, elements of grammar, and summarization strategies for narrative and expository texts.

Standard Pace, Volume 1: Standard pace is for students who need to build literacy skills from the ground up. Standard Pace introduces decoding and encoding with the primary sounds of consonants and vowels, instructs and introduces basic elements of grammar, and oral summarization strategies for narrative and expository text.

Structure Reading & Spelling Professional Learning, Volume 2

Participants in this two-day, live virtual training will deepen their understanding of foundational literacy skills, understand the impact of reduced literacy skills on adults, and learn research-based methods of instruction specific to an adult learner.
Volume 2 Accelerated: Students in Volume 2 Accelerated will build word attack strategies for multisyllabic words, understand a variety of text structures to build comprehension, expand vocabulary, and strengthen grammar for confident, effective writing.

Volume 2 Standard: Volumes 2A & 2B Standard follow a developmentally appropriate pace, guiding adult learners through all six syllable types and basic syllable division. Through shared reading experiences with the instructor, students in the Standard Pace will be exposed to rich vocabulary, strategies to build deep comprehension, and sentence construction through lessons in basic elements of grammar.
  • This group does much-needed work in the Houston community, focusing on adults who have specialized learning needs.

Structured Reading & Spelling Professional Learning, Volume 3

The Standard and Accelerated paces merge in Volume 3. All students are now on the same pace learning advanced concepts in sound / symbol correspondence, syllable division patterns, and word parts. Students in Volume 3 continue to participate in lessons dedicated to deep comprehension and composition tasks.
COMING SOON: Structured Reading & Spelling Volume 3 Professional Learning is an On-Demand class. This self-paced 8-hour training provides instructors with the knowledge needed to lead students to mastery of advanced literacy concepts.

Structured Reading & Spelling Professional Learning, Volume 4

The final volume of SRS teaches students advanced Latin and Greek word parts to deepen vocabulary knowledge. Unique to Volume 4, instructors will guide students through a series of literacy tasks required in everyday life such as completing medical forms or composing a professional email.
COMING SOON: Structured Reading & Spelling Volume 4: To complete the SRS professional learning cycle, participants will enroll in an additional On-Demand class. This class will prepare the instructor to facilitate activities in functional literacy with students.

No, not currently.

Lessons typically last 45-60 minutes, though they can be adjusted based on student needs.

Yes, if instructional time is limited, lessons can be divided, but content should always follow the given sequence for optimal student progress.

The professional development provides information regarding assessment and how to use the tools embedded in the curriculum to guide instruction. Additionally, the program includes a placement screener to help determine whether a student should be placed in the Standard or Accelerated pace.

Ideally, students should receive intervention 5 days a week, with a minimum of 3-4 days.

Professional Development can be delivered as live-virtual instruction or in-person training. Volumes 3 and 4 are available in a self-paced, On-Demand format.

Because SRS is a unique curriculum that differs from other Neuhaus programs, materials can only be purchased alongside the professional development training.
