Accurate & Automatic Reading: First Instruction

In Accurate and Automatic Reading (AAR), participants learn to build essential foundational word identification skills through explicit, systematic instruction in the structure of the English language, supported by reading practice, and to deliver effective, evidence-based decoding lessons. Instruction covers phoneme-grapheme correspondences, syllable types, and morpheme patterns, moving from isolated skill practice into connected text so students build both accuracy and automaticity. Participants also practice the daily lesson routine themselves before taking it back to their own classroom.

Audience: 1st–3rd grade teachers, and teachers of students who need instruction in foundational decoding; may also be appropriate for students outside that grade range.

Details: Runs 12 hours over 2 days, in person or live virtual.

Participants leave with a suggested scope and sequence, with a daily instructional routine of 25–35 minutes; can also be used as supplemental instruction alongside a core reading program.
