Participants in Neuhaus Education Center’s first KASTOR program were greeted with a reception May 1, 2012, to kick off the two year-mentoring program for 33 first through third grade teachers who are in their novice years of professional teaching. During their two-year tenure as KASTOR scholars, these teachers will receive regular and continuous mentoring by Neuhaus professional staff and professional development workshops and classes tailored to their individual needs. This innovative new program aims to equip the participants with the expertise needed to be effective teachers of reading, which is the most important factor in student achievement. This year’s participating teachers were selected after a rigorous application process that involved essay writing and extended interviews. KASTOR is free of charge to the teachers and their school districts through the generosity of the Brown Foundation, Hamman foundation, Houston Live Stock Show and Rodeo, the Kinder Foundation, and the Schurlock Foundation.
