AppSense: Math Apps You Can Count On

Here are some math apps and web-based tools that you can count on to support learning. These digital learning apps and tools are great for classroom use, but also wonderful for homeschooling, mobile learning, and classroom practice. As teachers and educators what produces the best effect at which moment may change, so you differentiate your instruction. Your teaching tools may include traditional "old-fashioned" textbooks, interactive whiteboards, laptops and apps on the iPad. These options are only a means, not a goal. Here are some helpful digital math and screen casting apps:
- Cloud Math Free (iPhone, iPad; iOS 3.0+) Free
Learn basic addition and subtraction in a fun easy way with this app. You can change the difficulty level as you progress.
- Park Math (iPhone, iPad; iOS 3.0+) $1.99
Park Math provides kids with a fun way to learn math. Learn to count, add, subtract, sort, and more, all while playing at the virtual park.
- Rainbow Math (iPhone, iPad; iOS 5.0+) $1.99
Rainbow Math is the perfect app for elementary children to learn the four basic functions of math—addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The app is designed with fun images and colors to keep kids interested.
- Splash Math (iPad; iOS 4.2+) $9.99 ea
The Splash Math apps are grade-specific, making it easy for students to practice math skills for grades 1-5. All content is aligned to the common core standards.
- Coin Math (iPhone, iPad; iOS 3.0+) $1.99
Learn how to recognize, count, add, and make change with U.S. coins.
- Math Drills (iPhone, iPad; iOS 4.2+) $1.99
This graphically rich and fun environment allows up to 50 students to practice simple mathematical functions in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Each student’s questions are customized to his/her strengths and weaknesses, and progress reports are available to track progress.
- Long Multiplication (iPhone, iPad; optimized for iPhone 5) $3.99

This app helps you learn multiplication visually by displaying graphically rich multiplication tables.
- Algebra Touch (iPhone, iPad; iOS 5.0+) $1.99
This app's drag-and-drop technology helps make algebra easier by allowing you to shuffle the terms between sides of the equations.
- Quick Graph+ (iPhone, iPad; iOS 5.1+) $1.99
Quick Graph is a powerful scientific graphing calculator app. It features unlimited graphs, VGA output, 2D and 3D equation plotting, and much more.
- Talking Scientific Calculator (iPhone, iPad; iOS 4.3+) $4.99
Talking Scientific Calculator can read numbers, answers, and formulas aloud to you. It has two entry modes, and the entire app is accessible to VoiceOver users.
- Free Graphing Calculator (iPhone, iPad, iOS 5.0+) Free

Practicing math facts takes time and lots of practice, here is a way to accomplish this in an enormously engaging format.
- Khan Academy (iPhone, iPad, iOS 5.1+) Free
Khan Academy allows you to learn almost anything for free. The iOS app is the best way to view Khans complete library of over 3500 videos. This academy has numerous K-12 math videos for viewing.
- Explain Everything (iPad, iOS 5.1+) $2.99
Explain Everthing is an easy to use screen casting and interactive whiteboard tool that lets you annotate, animate, narrarate, import and export almost anything to anywhere. Great tool for teachers to explain or re-teach instructional concepts/lessons to students.
- Educreations Interactive Whiteboard (iPad, iOS 5.0+) Free
This app turns your iPad into a recordable whiteboard. Teachers can create video tutorials as simple as touching, tapping and taping content. This is a useful tool to explain a math formula or animated lesson. Teachers can help students by putting lessons on the web so students can watch anywhere anytime. This screen casting app has audio, writing and drawing capabilities to transform the way ideas are shared. This app makes it easy for teachers to add visual and verbal elements to transform teaching of complex concepts. Users can make content public by sharing by email or with groups created for controlled sharing. Content can be shared publicly on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. This app offers additional advanced analytics such as tracking the number and length of views.
