Neuhaus has long believed that a knowledgeable and skilled teacher of reading is the best way to promote reading success. During the 2011-2012 school year, Neuhaus provided professional development to more than 2500 teachers, reading specialists, and principals at Houston Independent School District. The overarching goal of the initiative was the improved literacy achievement of students in general education classrooms as well as of students with dyslexia or other reading disabilities. Many of the professional development resources are available to participants online.

Houston ISD Pre-K Initiative

Oral language and world knowledge are the foundations of reading comprehension. Building language and knowledge begins long before children enter school. Therefore, the parent is a child's first teacher.

The Secondary Reading Initiative at HISD began in the year 2012. The goal of the initiative is improved literacy achievement of students in general classrooms as well as students with dyslexia and other reading disabilities in Grades six through twelve, by delivering professional development to teachers.
