Application Process
General education Grade 1, 2, or 3 teachers in Houston-area public schools with 1 to 3 years of teaching experience are invited to participate in a unique two-year mentorship program, Knowledgeable and Skilled Teachers of Reading (KASTOR).
Please apply as soon as possible even though you may not be certain about your Fall teaching assignment.
To apply:
- Complete an application form.
- Secure a copy (does not need to be official) of your transcript that displays highest degree earned.
- Secure a letter of recommendation from your principal.
- Prepare documentation of your desire to participate in this program
- A filmed statement of your strengths and weaknesses in teaching reading that is related to your expectations of how participation in an on-going, collaborative mentorship will strengthen your skills as a reading teacher.
- A written statement that identifies what you learned in your first year(s) of teaching that was not included in your teacher preparation program and your long term-goals as a professional educator.

- Application materials do not have to be submitted together.
- The application form, transcript, letter of recommendation, and written statement may be submitted electronically, via mail, or fax.
- The filmed statement may be submitted electronically or on a DVD.

All application materials will be reviewed. KASTOR applicants will be notified of their status (accepted or wait-listed). KASTOR scholars will indicate their commitment to fulfull the expectations of the KASTOR program. KASTOR scholars will be recognized in various Neuhaus publications and events.
